Best car battery for a Toyota Hilux in WA (every model from 2005)

Hilux is the most common car we replace batteries in across WA. Here's the right fitment for every model since 2005, plus dual-battery setups for touring.

By Sami — Car Battery Perth 24/7

The Hilux is everywhere in WA — tradies' utes, mine fleet vehicles, touring rigs from Margaret River to Karratha. It's also the single most common vehicle we replace batteries in. After hundreds of callouts, here's what actually works for each generation.

Hilux N70 (2005-2015) — KUN26R and similar

These are the workhorse era — solid mechanical diesels, no Stop-Start, no fancy electronics demanding AGM. The factory fitment was N70ZZ (also called N70ZZL depending on terminal layout). The terminal orientation matters; get it wrong and the cables don't reach.

  • Recommended: Century N70ZZ or N70ZZL — confirm terminal layout before ordering
  • CCA: 700+ for diesel, 580+ for petrol
  • Expected life in Perth: 3-4 years (diesel cranks hard, so don't push past 4)

Hilux N80 (2015-2023) — the SR5/Rogue/Rugged era

The N80 introduced Toyota's mild Stop-Start system on some variants (typically auto diesels). The auxiliary electrical load also jumped considerably. Factory fitment varies by spec:

VariantBattery typeCommon size
Workmate manual dieselHeavy duty floodedN70ZZ
SR / SR5 auto diesel (Stop-Start)EFBN70ZZ EFB or 95D31L EFB
Rogue / Rugged / Rugged XEFB heavy dutyN70ZZL EFB
Petrol 2.7LStandard flooded55D23L

Tip for tradies

If you're running an inverter for tools (drop saw, vac, charger), upgrade to EFB even if your variant came with standard flooded. The deeper cycling will destroy a standard battery inside a year.

Hilux N80 facelift (2020-2023) and N20 (2024+)

Newer Hilux models (especially the GR Sport and post-facelift autos) use larger EFB or even AGM in some markets. The N20 (2024 onward) is moving toward AGM as standard. Always check your existing battery label before ordering — Toyota's spec sheet doesn't always match what actually shipped.

Dual-battery setups for touring

Half our Hilux customers are running dual-battery setups for fridges, lights, winches, and camping gear. The rules:

  1. 1Crank battery (under bonnet): same spec as factory. Don't substitute a deep-cycle here — it can't deliver the cold cranking amps a diesel needs.
  2. 2Auxiliary battery: AGM deep-cycle. Sealed, spill-proof, can be mounted in the tray or cab. 100Ah is the common sweet spot for a fridge + LED lights + USB charging for a long weekend.
  3. 3DC-DC charger between them, not just an isolator. Modern Hilux alternators are 'smart' and will undercharge a basic isolator setup. A 25A DC-DC charger from Redarc or Victron is the standard.
  4. 4Don't mix battery chemistries on the same charger — AGM and lithium have different charge profiles.

Frequently asked

What CCA do I need for a Hilux diesel in Perth?+

Minimum 700 CCA, ideally 750+ for the 2.8L diesel. Heat actually reduces the effective CCA, so over-spec rather than under-spec.

Can I fit a lithium battery to my Hilux?+

As a crank battery, generally no — the alternator profile and BMS issues make it more trouble than it's worth. As an auxiliary battery (with a proper DC-DC charger), yes, lithium is a great choice for serious touring.

How do I know if my Hilux has Stop-Start?+

Look for an 'A' or 'ECO' icon on the dash that lights up at idle. If your engine shuts off at the lights, you have it. SR and SR5 autos from 2018+ generally do.

Do you fit dual-battery systems?+

We fit and supply the batteries; for the wiring, isolator, and DC-DC install we work with a couple of trusted auto-electricians across Perth and can refer you.
